Originally released in 1952 as a collection of body parts and accessories that could be attached to a real potato (or many other fruits and vegetables), Mr. Potato Head has become one of the most widely recognized toy brands in the US. It was more than ten years before a plastic potato body was added and almost another ten years before the size of the toy was doubled in order to comply with new US toy regulations. Of course, there’ve been a number of themed Mr. Potato Head sets such as Darth Tater, Optimash Prime and Taters of the Lost Ark. One set in particular has the distinction of being the most expensive Mr. Potato Head in the world.

These sparkling Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head sets were created and signed by Jay Strongwater. Available in only a limited number, these expensive toys were hand-jeweled with over 50,000 Swarovski crystals in seventeen different colors. That includes everything from the potato body to the plastic ears.
The world’s most expensive Mr. Potato Head was featured in the Neiman Marcus catalogue in 2004 and sold for $8,000 apiece.
