85 Years of Marriage

Herbert and Zelmyra Fisher

My mother and father-in-law were married fifty five years. I thought that was a feat that not to many people ever reached. Well there is someone who has got them beat and beats it by a pretty good margin.
Herbert and Zelmyra Fisher will be celebrating their wedding ceremony of 85 years ago on the thirteenth of May 2010. They live in New Bern, North Carolina, and they will hold the worlds record of wedded bliss on that day. Herbert is 104 and Zelmyra is 101 years old.
You have to go all the way back, 200 years ago, to find the previous record holder. That marriage lasted 86 years, but Zelmyra and Herbert will be 86 years this coming May.
On the tenth anniversary of the Fishers marriage, the vacuum cleaner became a household item. On their wedding anniversary, Patti Page's song, "Doggie in The Window", was the top song of the day. On their anniversary, that yellow smiley face started to appear everywhere. When they hit the 75 year mark, the top reality show was "Survivor".
Zelmyra describes Herbert as the only boyfriend that she ever had. She says that he has never been mean to her, and it was his sweet disposition that attracted her to him.
Herbert says that they have always led a good life, and never miss church on Sunday, an expression of their reverence toward Almighty God.
The years are catching up to them though. Zelmyra walks with a walker and Herbert has had some loss of hearing, but they still manage a life together.
Herbert loves baseball and is a big fan of the Atlanta Braves. He also enjoys a game of golf now and then.
They both agree, that their long life and years of matrimony, have been attributed to their faith in God, and their strong affectionate family.
What a tribute they both are to the strong character and nature of the family unit, and at the hub of that unit, a strong commitment of love and honor from two people.
My hat is off to you Herbert and Zelmyra Fisher. God bless you both.
